Buying diamond jewellery without knowing how to check its quality is like buying a car without checking the engine — the sparkle on the outside tells you very little about what you're actually paying for. A genuine quality check looks past appearance and verifies grade, authenticity, and value, using the same standards gemologists use every day.

Why a Quality Check Matters Before You Buy

Two diamonds can look identical to the naked eye and still differ in value by tens of thousands of rupees. The difference comes down to clarity characteristics, colour tint, cut precision, and carat weight — factors that are invisible without the right checks. Skipping this step means trusting the seller's word alone, which is exactly what a quality check is designed to avoid.

The 4Cs: The Foundation of Every Diamond Quality Check

Every diamond grading system in the world — used by GIA, IGI, and every reputable jeweller — is built on four factors known as the 4Cs. Understanding them is the first and most important step of any quality check.

01

Cut

Determines how well the diamond returns light. A well-cut diamond looks brighter and more brilliant than a larger, poorly cut one — cut affects appearance more than any other factor.

02

Colour

Graded D (colourless) to Z (light yellow). The closer to colourless, the rarer and more valuable — D-F is the premium range, G-J is near-colourless and excellent value.

03

Clarity

Measures internal inclusions and surface blemishes on an 11-grade scale from Flawless to Included. VS2 or higher is generally "eye-clean" — invisible without magnification.

04

Carat

The diamond's weight, not its size. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Larger diamonds are rarer, so price increases faster than weight — a 2ct stone costs more than two 1ct stones combined.

"A well-cut diamond in a lower clarity or colour grade often looks more brilliant than a poorly cut diamond in a higher grade." Cut affects brilliance more than any other factor

Certification: The Only Real Proof of Quality

No home test can replace an independent grading certificate. The two most trusted labs worldwide are GIA (Gemological Institute of America) and IGI (International Gemological Institute). Each certificate records carat weight, colour grade, clarity grade, cut grade, precise measurements, fluorescence level, and a unique report number laser-inscribed on the diamond's girdle.

Before finalising any purchase, verify that report number directly on the issuing lab's own website — gia.edu for GIA reports, igi.org for IGI reports. If the number doesn't match, treat the stone as uncertified regardless of what the seller claims.

5 At-Home Tests to Check Diamond Purity

These simple tests won't replace a certificate, but they're a useful first check, especially for loose stones.

The Fog Test

Breathe on the stone. A real diamond clears almost instantly due to its thermal conductivity; a fake stays fogged for a few seconds.

The Water Test

Drop a loose diamond into a glass of water. Genuine diamonds sink immediately because of their high density; most fakes float or sink slowly.

The Newspaper Test

Place the stone flat-side down on printed text. A genuine diamond refracts light so sharply the text becomes illegible; if you can read it, it's likely fake.

UV Fluorescence Check

Under a 365nm UV torch, natural and lab-grown diamonds typically glow blue. A yellow-green glow usually signals moissanite, not a diamond.

10x Loupe Inspection

Look for pinpoints, feathers, and clouds under 10x magnification. Seeing nothing at 10x generally indicates at least VS1 clarity.

Thermal Probe Test

A professional thermal conductivity probe confirms authenticity in seconds — diamonds conduct heat 4-5x better than most simulants.

Real vs Fake: How to Tell the Difference

Moissanite, cubic zirconia (CZ), and glass are the most common diamond simulants. Here's how they compare on the checks that matter most:

Diamond Quality Check: Final Checklist

  • 01Request the certificate — GIA or IGI, and verify the report number on the lab's own website.
  • 02Check the clarity grade — aim for VS2 or higher for eye-clean purity.
  • 03Confirm the colour grade — D-F for premium, G-J for excellent value.
  • 04Verify the cut grade — Excellent or Very Good for the best light return.
  • 05Run the basic tests — fog test and newspaper test for a quick authenticity check.
  • 06Ask for a loupe or thermal probe demonstration — especially for a significant purchase.
  • Match the carat weight on the certificate to within 0.01ct
  • Check the fluorescence level if colour purity matters to you
  • Inspect the setting for secure prongs before you finalise the piece
